e-Government

The e-government Unit of the State Services Commission has the leadership role in advancing the use of the Internet to deliver services and facilitate interaction between New Zealanders and Government. More information on the e-government Unit is available on their website www.e.govt.nz

Some of the programmes and projects currently of interest are outlined below.

SEEMail (Secure Electronic Environment Mail) is designed to facilitate the secure exchange of email and attachments between government organisations using the Internet. The environment can carry information classified up to RESTRICTED, and currently over 40 government agencies use the SEEMail environment.

For more information on the S.E.E. project and outputs, refer to the SSC's S.E.E. Website

The e-government Programme's Online Authentication project, initiated in 2002 and currently in the 'Initial Implementation' phase, is looking at ways of ensuring that government services delivered over the Internet are going to the right person. This will be achieved by electronically verifying that people are who they say they are, and that privacy is protected at all times.

Here you'll find the Project Outline (external link), an Authentication Factsheet and other key documents.

The E-government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF) is a collection of policies and standards endorsed for New Zealand government IT systems. These help agencies work together electronically, means that systems, makes knowledge and experience reusable from one agency to another, and aims to encourage a consistent approach for dealing with government systems.
